The Art and Science of Japanese Glazes

Glazes (釉薬, yūyaku) are the coating applied to pottery before firing. They determine a piece's color, texture, sheen, and even how food looks on the surface. Understanding glazes helps you appreciate and choose pottery with confidence.

Major Glaze Types

Ash Glaze (灰釉, Kai-yū)

Japan's oldest glaze tradition, made from wood or plant ash. Produces soft yellows, greens, and browns. The natural variation in ash composition means every piece is unique.

Celadon (青磁, Seiji)

Iron-based glaze fired in a reduction kiln creates jade-green tones. Ranges from pale blue-green to deep olive depending on iron content and firing conditions.

Iron Glaze (鉄釉, Tetsu-yū)

High iron content produces rich browns, blacks, and reddish tones. Tenmoku (天目) glaze, known for its deep black with brown highlights, is the most famous variety.

Shino Glaze (志野釉)

Thick, milky white glaze unique to Mino ware. The feldspar-based glaze creates a warm, soft surface with occasional orange "fire marks" where the glaze is thin.

Oribe Glaze (織部釉)

Distinctive copper-green glaze named after tea master Furuta Oribe. Often used in combination with iron-painted designs on a white background.

Persimmon Glaze (柿釉, Kaki-yū)

Warm reddish-brown glaze characteristic of Mashiko ware. Made from iron-rich clay slip, it creates an inviting, earthy surface.
