How to Choose a Jubako (Tiered Box) | Size, Material & Style Guide

The Jubako Tradition

Jubako (重箱, tiered boxes) are an essential part of Japanese New Year celebrations, used to serve osechi-ryōri — the traditional multi-dish New Year feast. But these elegant containers are useful year-round for picnics, parties, and gift-giving.

Choosing by Size

  • 5-sun (15cm) — For 1–2 people, intimate celebrations
  • 6-sun (18cm) — For 2–3 people, the most popular size
  • 6.5-sun (19.5cm) — For 3–4 people, a generous family size
  • 7-sun (21cm) — For 4+ people or large gatherings

Number of Tiers

  • 2-tier — Compact, practical for small households
  • 3-tier — Traditional standard, good balance of variety and manageability
  • 4-tier — Full traditional set (one tier is often left empty as a wish for future prosperity)

Materials

  • Lacquerware (urushi) — The most traditional and elegant. Lightweight, durable, but requires careful maintenance
  • Wood — Natural beauty, lighter than lacquer, various finishes available
  • Synthetic/resin — Affordable, dishwasher safe, good for families with children
  • Ceramic — Heavy but beautiful, often used for serving rather than storage

Care Tips

  • Hand wash lacquer jubako with mild soap
  • Dry completely before stacking and storing
  • Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight
  • Use dividers (shikiri) to keep foods separated
