Japanese Tea Bowls (Chawan): A Guide to Choosing One for Matcha

A chawan — a Japanese tea bowl — is the heart of preparing matcha. It holds the whisked tea, warms the hands, and, more than any other piece, carries the feeling of the moment. If you are beginning to enjoy matcha at home, here is how to choose a chawan you will reach for again and again.

Shape, and the seasons

Traditionally, tea bowls change with the seasons. A wider, shallow bowl (hira-chawan) lets tea cool quickly and feels cool in summer; a taller, deeper bowl keeps tea warm and feels right in winter. For year-round use, a medium, rounded bowl is the most versatile place to start.

Glaze and feeling

Matcha’s bright green looks beautiful against a calm glaze. White and pale bowls make the color glow; darker stoneware glazes such as black oribe give a quieter, more grounded feeling. Choose the mood you want your tea to have.

Whisking and everyday use

A good chawan has enough width and depth to whisk comfortably with a chasen (bamboo whisk). Beyond matcha, a chawan is lovely for a simple bowl of rice or a small serving — it does not have to be reserved only for tea.

Caring for your bowl

Rinse gently, avoid harsh scrubbing on decorated surfaces, and dry well before storing. Treated kindly, a good bowl becomes a companion for years.
