What is Arita Ware? | 400 Years of Japanese Porcelain Excellence

The Birthplace of Japanese Porcelain

Arita ware (有田焼, Arita-yaki) is Japan's oldest porcelain tradition, born in the small town of Arita in Saga Prefecture over 400 years ago. In 1616, Korean potter Yi Sam-pyeong discovered high-quality porcelain stone in the area, launching an industry that would eventually influence ceramics worldwide.

Characteristics of Arita Ware

Arita porcelain is renowned for its brilliant white base, translucent quality, and intricate painted designs. The clay — derived from local porcelain stone — fires at extremely high temperatures (1,300°C), creating a hard, non-porous surface that is both beautiful and practical for daily use.

Common Styles

  • Sometsuke — Blue-and-white underglaze designs, the most classic Arita style
  • Iro-e (Kakiemon) — Colorful overglaze paintings featuring flowers, birds, and nature motifs
  • Kinrande — Luxurious gold-decorated pieces originally made for export
  • Nabeshima — The finest quality, originally produced exclusively for feudal lords

Arita's Global Influence

In the 17th century, Arita porcelain was exported to Europe through the Dutch East India Company via the port of Imari — which is why European collectors often call it "Imari ware." These pieces inspired European porcelain makers, including Meissen in Germany and Delft in the Netherlands.

How to Choose Arita Ware

  • Check the weight — Quality Arita porcelain feels lightweight yet strong
  • Look at the translucency — Hold it up to light; fine porcelain has a subtle glow
  • Examine the painting — Hand-painted pieces show subtle brush strokes and variations
  • Feel the base — The unglazed foot ring should be smooth and even

Modern Arita

Today, Arita continues to innovate while honoring tradition. The "2016/ project," launched for the 400th anniversary, brought together Dutch designers and Arita craftspeople to create contemporary pieces that bridge East and West. Whether you choose a traditional sometsuke plate or a modern minimalist cup, Arita ware brings centuries of craftsmanship to your table.
